With rail connections between Tokyo and the Sea of Japan coastal city of Niigata still severed after the October 23 earthquakes,
Japan Airlines plans to extend its special domestic flights between Tokyo and Niigata to December 21, subject to government
approval.
JAL is currently operating four daily round trips on the 167-mile temporary route, using 298-seat A300 aircraft, and will continue
with this schedule.
In normal times the main transport link between Niigata - the largest city on the north Japan coast - and the Tokyo region is the
Joetsu Shinkansen, a high-speed ‘’bullet train’’ line. Extensive damage to the railway tracks and infrastructure occurred during
the earthquakes and damage surveys and repair work are still in progress.
