Beijing, host of the 2008 Olympic Games, is moving to reinvent itself as a
modern cosmopolitan city fit for the world's greatest sporting spectacular.
With a history spanning thousands of years, Beijing is a melting pot of the
old and new, with skyscrapers towering above ancient pagodas and modern shopping centres competing with traditional markets. Even with the great
rush forward towards modernisation, it remains a timepiece to a bygone era.
