Marriott named to manage former Righa Royal Miri resort in Sarawak

Travel News Asia 9 July 2003

Marriott International has been named to manage the 225 room Rihga Royal Miri Resort in Sarawak, Malaysia, under a management agreement with Majupun Sdn. Bhd.. Following renovation of its guestrooms, food and beverage outlets and other public areas, the property will be rebranded the Miri Marriott Resort & Spa later this year - it will be the seventh hotel in Marriott’s portfolio in Malaysia.

The resort is located at Brighton Beach, outside of Miri’s central business district, surrounded by large gardens. Most guestrooms enjoy views of the South China Sea. Sarawak is Malaysia’s largest state and flight connections from Miri are available to  Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and the Mulu National Park, a world heritage site.

“We are delighted by the continued expansion of our portfolio in Malaysia,” said Ed Fuller, president and managing director for international lodging at Marriott. “As the premier hotel in Miri, the resort is ideally situated to attract leisure and business travelers as well as regional conference attendees. We are confident that it will be successful in its market and expect to generate marketing and operational synergies with our hotels in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu which is currently under construction.”

Raziah Mahmud, chairman for Majupun Sdn Bhd, said, “We are confident that Marriott will bring industry best practices to the operation and management of our property. With Marriott’s excellent brand recognition and global marketing network, our resort should benefit substantially and we look forward to enhanced financial performance. We are pleased to welcome Marriott as our partner and a valued member of our community in Miri.”

For dining and entertainment, the Miri Marriott Resort & Spa will offer a casual restaurant offering three meals daily, a sports bar and a pool bar. The existing Rihga Disco will be closed and converted to a spa that will have five treatment rooms prior to the conversion.

Recreational amenities will include a large outdoor swimming pool, a health club, two outdoor tennis courts, a children’s activity center, a putting green and a soccer field.

Other amenities will include a business center, laundry/valet service and a prayer room.

For social events and conferences, the Miri Marriott Resort & Spa will offer 773 square meters of total space, including a 433 square meter ballroom that will be divisible into two sections and four additional meeting rooms in varying sizes.
