An unprecedented ‘Clean Regime’ has been mounted at
the Great Eagle Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, in an attempt to provide additional precautions
against the mysterious Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus.
Every hour, housekeepers
thoroughly disinfect every single door and toilet, plus fixtures and fittings in public areas from telephones to
handrails and tables. Restaurants, guestrooms and offices are also being
disinfected daily.
The measures come as a response to World Health Organisation
recommendations that the best way of reducing the risk from the disease is
to keep public areas clean and enhance personal hygiene.
“While we have absolutely no cases of the disease reported at the hotel, nor
any reason to believe the risk to our guests is anything other than minimal -
in the obvious interests of both staff and travelers during these uncertain
times, we aren’t taking any chances,” said General Manager Nigel Roberts.
The regime extends from door to floor to ceiling and involves cleaning
telephones, ashtrays, mirrors, handrails, doorknobs, furniture, tables and
chairs – anything a guest or member of staff is likely to touch.
In particular, all staff in direct contact with food or close contact with guests
or their personal accessories are strictly required to wear facemasks and
gloves.
Facemasks are also made available for any guests who feel more secure
wearing them, particularly in the crowded street areas outside, and on request, guests are given detailed, updated information about Atypical
Pneumonia, including the Department of Health hotline telephone numbers.
“We’re also being extra-vigilant in cleaning the central air-conditioning
system,” added Mr Roberts.
“Thankfully, The Great Eagle Hotel has not been affected by SARS - but
we’re taking every possible measure to ensure the welfare of our guests and
staff. Of course there has been a significant impact on the business of all
hotels in Hong Kong, but we are still operating as normal here – only with an
even greater emphasis on the safety and security of all our guests.” |
