KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is introducing a new Delftware blue-and-white
house to mark the airline's 84th birthday. Erik Varwijk, Director KLM The
Netherlands, presented Tuesday, the first example to Mr. van den Hurk, owner of
the original house on which the 84th KLM house has been modeled. The new
ceramic ornament is a replica of the historic building Taverne de Oude Munt in
Weert. This is where the Count of Horne had his coins minted during the Eighty Years War.
Delftware houses, filled with Bols Jonge Jenever, have been given to KLM
World Business Class passengers since the 1950s. Since 1994 the number of
houses in the collection has corresponded with KLM's age. Each year since a
new example has been added to the collection. These small houses have become popular collectables both in the Netherlands and abroad.
These Delftware houses are usually replicas of historic Dutch buildings. The
Taverne de Oude Munt in Weert has been chosen to be the 84th KLM Delftware house. The building has been a restaurant since 1974. |
