A
bomb explosion has gone off at one of the leading five star hotels in
Jakarta, the JW Marriott. The blast occurred around midday local time,
and reports state that at least fourteen people have died with many
others injured. The
JW Marriott was regarded by many as one of the most secure hotels in
Jakarta, not only because it had implemented heightened security
measures but
also as it
located in the heart of the business center which is close to the diplomatic area of
Menteng. One of Jakarta's most exclusive suburbs, and home to dozens of Western embassies and consuls,
Menteg also includes the residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia. The adjacent Rajawali building houses the embassies of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The
Marriott opened in September 2001 and has 33 floors and a total of 333
rooms. It is believed that the hotel was running at around 70%
occupancy. Anyone
