In commemoration of the 105th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine
Independence, the Philippine Independence Day Committee 2003, in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok and with the support
of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines,
are holding a special dinner-concert entitled "Mabuhay, Sawasdee!" featuring the Philippine Madrigal Singers.
The Philippine Madrigal Singers (MADZ) is an internationally-renowned
group that specializes in the highly sophisticated, unaccompanied polyphonic piece known as the madrigal, a popular musical form in the
16th - 17th centuries. The group performs in a circular formation with each
singer sitting alternately according to voice classification and Professor
Veneracion occupying the first seat on the left. Singing a capella, the choir
gets its cue from Professor Veneracion, who conducts not with her hands but with body gestures and facial expressions.
The Madz won the much-coveted European Grand Prix Competition in
1997, making them the only Southeast Asian choir to ever win the award.
They have given command performances for heads of state, royalty and
other persons of high authority. These included Pope Paul VI, Presidents
Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Juan Carlos de Bourbon, and Lee Kuan Yew.
The Madz has cut 35 volumes of records and discs, in the Philippines as
well as in Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany, France, Slovenia, Republic of
Korea and the United States and are recognized as ambassadors of goodwill, promoting
international peace and understanding through the joys of choral singing. The Dinner-Concert will be held at the Ballroom of Shangri-La Hotel on 13
June 2003 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are priced at Bt 1,000.
