The countdown has started for hotels, tour operators, theme parks, national
parks and wildlife attractions across the globe to put in their applications for
a prestigious sustainable tourism award.
British Airways’ Tourism for Tomorrow competition aims to raise awareness
of the world’s role models for responsible tourism and is judged by leading
figures in the environmental and conservation world. The closing date for
entries to this year’s competition is 15 July 2003.
The competition assesses the extent to which tourism projects benefit the
local community, protect natural and cultural heritage, control energy and
water use, educate local people and visitors and contribute towards a better
life for future generations.
Awards are given in six categories which cover a whole range of tourism
projects.
Past winners include The Wetland Centre in Barnes, Taybet Zaman Village
Hotel and Resort in Jordan, Karimabad and Baltit Project Development in Pakistan, Vale do Lima in Portugal and Chumbe Island Coral Park in
Zanzibar.
Amanda Marks, managing director of last year’s Global winner, Tribes Travel,
said: “ We were delighted and proud to win the British Airways Tourism for
Tomorrow award. It was a vindication of all our efforts in the field of responsible tourism. The award has given us a real boost by raising our
profile, leading to an increase in bookings and greater recognition for our
organisation throughout the wider tourism and environmental communities.” |
