On 11th December 1928, a legend of Asian hospitality was born - The
Peninsula Hong Kong opened her doors for the first time, and has been welcoming guests and patrons from all over the world ever since.
In celebration of the 75th Anniversary, The Hon Michael D
Kadoorie, Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited and the Board
of Directors hosted a charity gala last night which raised HK$3.9Million (US$500,000) in support of five non-government subvented
charitable organizations benefiting the people of Hong Kong: AIDS Concern, Camp Quality Hong Kong, Hong Kong Alzheimer's Disease
Association, KELY Support Group and Make-A-Wish Foundation of Hong Kong.
Strictly by invitation only, the party took the format of an open house
at Hong Kong's "Grande Dame" with free-flowing wine, food, music and entertainment throughout the hotel, and an opening ceremony in the
presence of The Hon Tung Chee Hwa, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR.
Live and silent auctions of magnificent prizes conducted by Sotheby's,
live performances throughout the hotel and stunning displays provided the entertainment for the evening and made this event the fund-raising
occasion of the season.
On behalf of The Peninsula, The Hon Michael D Kadoorie presented the
proceeds raised during the evening to the charities. The donation funds was generated from the lifestyle and silent auctions, in addition to the
generous cash contributions already received from the event partners and
friends of the hotel.
Major sponsors included American Express, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars
(represented in Hong Kong by Goodwood Motor Cars Limited), Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, Cartier and
Dior.
Live auction prizes included a trip for eight to The Peninsula Palace
Beijing in a Gulfstream private jet; a Cartier 1928 vintage clock; a trip for
two to the UK with first class airfare and a private guided tour of the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars workshop; a Vertu white gold mobile telephone
and a trip for four with business class airfare by Dragonair to The Peninsula Bangkok staying in The Peninsula Suite. |
