Despite an increasing number of travel
complications and many major
international events around the region being cancelled because of
the COVID19 outbreak, the organiser of the 15th Supersports Laguna Phuket
Marathon say they are still receiving registrations and
expect 15,000 runners from more than 70 countries to take part.
Scheduled to take place 13-14 June 2020,
the Supersports Laguna Phuket Marathon
has been certified by IAAF Association of International Marathons and Distance Races since
the event's first year, and is a qualifying event for the Boston
Marathon.
With over 80% of runners coming from outside of Phuket
and 20% travelling from overseas, the marathon contributed around THB291.58 million to Phuket's economy
in 2019 alone.
“Our registration numbers are up on this time last
year,” said Roman Floesser, CEO of the event's organiser, GAA Events.
“Despite COVID19 concerns, runners are committed to taking part
and we are working with our partners to ensure a safe and fun race
for all. Event planning is on schedule, registrations continue to
be received and we are confident that more than 15,000 runners
from around the world will take part this year.”
Supersports recently signed a three-year title sponsorship
agreement for the event.
