ATPCO and Routehappy - Interview with Robert
Albert at IATA AIR Symposium 2019
IATA's
second annual Airline Industry Retailing Symposium, formerly part
of the World Passenger Symposium, was held in Bangkok from
29-31 October 2019.
Over 600 high-level aviation industry delegates
flew to Thailand from around the
world to network, share ideas and learn more about the latest ideas, trends
and solutions shaping airline retailing and distribution.
Robert Albert, a visionary and founder of Routehappy in 2011 in New
York, USA, was one such VIP delegate. Routehappy, which was acquired by ATPCO
(the Airline Tariff Publishing Company) in February 2018 and
fully integrated in February 2019, has become one of the most
important components in the aviation industry ecosystem.
In this interview, filmed on 29
October at the IATA AIR Symposium, Steven Howard of TravelNewsAsia.com asks Robert,
currently ATPCO's EVP Retailing, to give
us an update on the company, NDC, NGS and the industry in general.
Robert tells us what ATPCO does, how he came up
with the idea for starting Routehappy, why it didn't work out as
originally planned, how Routehappy has changed in the past two
years, and how its phenomenal growth in such a short time makes
him feel.
We discuss how ATCPO is involved with NDC, what
the Next Generation Storefront (NGS) brings to the industry, and
why
ATPCO's recent deal with Sabre is so important to the future
evolution of flight shopping.
Robert tells us what role ATCPO plays in
educating the industry, what Asia Pacific expansion plans the
company has - including for their office in Singapore,
partnerships in China and India, why he feels that low cost
carriers are not more involved in NDC, and what developments he
foresees in 2020 and beyond.
We also talk about what the industry means by
"simplifying the shopping experience", what limits there are in
ancillary revenue, and whether there is a danger that the airline
industry will complicate flight booking more than necessary. All
that and much, much more in the HD video and podcast below.
