The Four Seasons Resort Langkawi has become the
latest hotel in the region to eliminate the use of single-use
plastic water bottles thanks to an on-site water bottling system.
Following a seven-step purification process, the
in-house system produces high-quality drinking water that is
served in glass bottles, a material that can be recycled and
reused infinitely. Guests can choose between still as well as
sparkling water.
The use of reusable, renewable glass bottles
that can be stored on-site eliminates the need for transport and
waste disposal of plastic bottles. Reducing the amount of plastic
to be recycled, in turn, also reduces the amount of energy
required for recycling.
David Macklin, GM of the Four Seasons Resort
Langkawi, said, “We
are very clear that the primary aim of building the water bottling
plant is to create a more sustainable environment, not to maximise
profits. Nature is a constant and powerful presence at
Four Seasons Resort Langkawi, from our mile-long stretch of
pristine beach to the age-old mangroves next door. Every day, our
surroundings remind us how vital it is to preserve these
spectacular places for generations to come. This
initiative is a significant step towards nurturing the long-term
health of Langkawi’s precious ecosystems, especially the UNESCO
Kilim Karst Geopark.”
In the past, the resort has reduced plastic
wastage in various other ways, such as offering dispensers for
bathroom amenities instead of individually packed toiletries,
using recyclable paper take-away containers as far as possible,
and banning plastic drinking straws.
