Stewart Bainum, Jr., Chairman of Choice Hotels
International, will be honored with a Lifetime
Achievement Award at the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS)
in Los Angeles in January.
The award is
presented to an individual who has made significant contributions
to the hospitality industry through their actions, deeds, and
great accomplishments.
Stewart Bainum, Jr. is Chairman of
Choice Hotels International and Artis Senior Living. Since the
1980’s, he has led a number of enterprises. Stewart joined the leadership
team of Quality Inns, which later became Choice Hotels, in 1976.
Since then, the company has grown from 240 Quality Inn hotels to
more than 6,800 properties under 12 hotel brands in more than 40
countries. He has served as Chairman of the Board since 1997.
Stewart joined his father's Manor Care business in 1972, serving
as Chairman and CEO from 1987 to 1998.
The Washington Business
Journal credited Bainum with "turning the low-key company into a
billion-dollar enterprise" and the hotels division into the
world's second largest hotel franchisor. Bainum, who was described
by Forbes as a "fiscal-minded Democrat," served eight years in the
Maryland General Assembly as Delegate (1979-1983) and State
Senator (1983-1987).
Stewart received a B.A. degree in history
from Pacific Union College and a Masters in Business
Administration from UCLA. He is also a member of UCLA's Anderson
School of Management's Board of Advisors and the Real Estate
Roundtable.
“We are honored to be presenting the 2019 ALIS
Lifetime Achievement Award to Stewart Bainum, Jr.,” said Jim
Burba, Co-Founder of BHN and ALIS Chair. “Under his leadership
over the past four decades, Choice Hotels has become one of the
world’s largest and best-known hotel companies. This, coupled with
his lifetime of achievements and civic engagement, makes Mr.
Bainum a most deserving recipient of this Award.”
