Li Na, a two-time Grand Slam Champion, will attend
this year’s Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open (PHKTO) as a Special Guest.
The Chinese superstar
will be taking part in a celebrity exhibition match on Tuesday, 9
October, as well as participating in a number of activities
throughout the tournament week of the WTA International Series
event, which runs from 6-14 October 2018.
The exhibition tie-break match, which will take place
at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium Centre Court, will be open to all Tuesday
ticket holders and preceded by the scheduled main draw matches for
the day. Her match
opponent is yet to be announced.
The first tennis
superstar from China, Li Na brought tennis to millions of people
in China after her win at the French Open in 2011, becoming the
first and only Grand Slam singles champion from Asia. The Chinese
player added to her Grand Slam haul in 2014 with an Australian
Open crown, catapulting her to a high of World No. 2 in the
rankings.
Throughout her career, Li Na blazed a
path for Chinese tennis, also becoming the first Chinese woman to
win a WTA title and to break into the top 10, sparking a huge
growth in the number of players in China and the region. She is
known for her speed around the court and her even quicker wit in
the press interview room, which made her a crowd favourite around
the world.
Chris Lai, Tournament Director and Hong
Kong Tennis Association Chief Executive Officer, said “Li Na is a
worldwide sports icon and true trailblazer in Asian tennis and we
are thrilled that she will be supporting PHKTO this year as our
Special Guest. Fans should not miss this rare chance to catch her
remarkable talents in action as well as her on court charisma.”
Oscar Chow, Chairman of the PHKTO Steering
Committee, said, “Having a star of Li Na’s stature is the perfect
way to celebrate our fifth edition. With this spectacular added
bonus to what is already a packed day of matches, fans are really
in for a treat and we expect Tuesday tickets to be in high
demand.”
