American disco group, Village People, will be the headline entertainment act at the HSBC Singapore
Rugby Sevens scheduled to take place at the National Stadium on 28-29 April.
Popular local
performers - Jack & Rai, Jive Talkin’, Sambamasala, and Too Much Drama are also featured in the action-packed music programme to
Rock, Ruck, and Rumble with 55,000 fans from across the world.
Famed for their on-stage costumes, catchy tunes and
lyrics, Village People has entertained millions for four decades
with their instantly recognisable dance hits such as “Y.M.C.A.”,
“Go West” and “In the Navy”, which have the power to convince even
the most reluctant to get up and boogie the night away.
Adapting to a more electronic and soulful music style with
their recent releases, the US band are sure to put a smile on every face when they perform their biggest hits late Sunday afternoon,
before the Cup third and fourth place play-off.
Fans of Singapore’s music scene are in for a
treat too as four of the most popular homegrown acts - Jack & Rai,
Jive Talkin’, Sambamasala, and Too Much Drama - will get
up-close-and-personal with fans at the FunZone at the 100PLUS
Promenade with live performances throughout the two tournament
days.
David Lim, Chairman of Rugby Singapore, said, “We are absolutely thrilled to have Village People
headlining the music line up at this year’s HSBC Singapore Rugby
Sevens. This iconic band needs no introduction and their music is
the perfect fit with the carnival atmosphere we are creating at
the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens. Together with Jack & Rai, Jive
Talkin’, Sambamasala, and Too Much Drama, there is something for
every fan in the stadium. With the fantastic programme of rugby,
music, and kids’ entertainment, the Singapore Sevens is indeed
back bigger, better, and bolder!”
Music will
also be in the air even before play begins, as Music After 7s
opens in Clarke Quay on Friday 27th April, a day before the
tournament starts.
Featuring some of Clarke Quay’s best local and regional bands, the
three-night music festival will kick off with Celtic band Gan Ainm,
who has built up an extensive repertoire of Irish and Top 40s
covers over the last fourteen years playing at McGettigan’s. On
Saturday (28 April), rock bands Sterofly and Sepia – who both play
at Highlander Clarke Quay – will take to the stage to entertain
fans with their renditions of various rock genres. The festival
closes out on Sunday night (29 April) with Paulaner Clarke Quay’s
Singaporean-Ukranian band Rockweller, who will drop tunes
influenced by a range of genres from glam rock to heavy metal and
even punk.
Jean Ng, Director, Sports, Singapore
Tourism Board, said, “The fringe offerings around the HSBC
Singapore Rugby Sevens like Music After 7s – which falls under the
Singapore Rugby Carnival – would add another dimension to the fan
experience this year. Together with Singapore’s eclectic mix of
vibrant dining and family-friendly lifestyle options, visiting
fans can expect a unique, all-round experience beyond the
world-class sporting action.”
At the Music After 7s, HSBC Singapore
Rugby 7s ticket-holders can enjoy various F&B promotions
throughout Clarke Quay. There will also be a free shuttle bus
service from the National Stadium to Clarke Quay for fans on both
Saturday and Sunday evenings.
