137 Pillars House Chiang Mai Implements New
Environmental Initiatives
[HD video below] 137 Pillars House Chiang Mai has implemented
the following two new environmental programmes as part of its CSR
initiatives.
Composting Organic Waste
and Producing Bio Char: 137 Pillars House
worked with WarmHeart Environment, a grassroots organization for
sustainable farming and the substantial reduction in smoke and
harmful particles in the air as a result of crop clearing by
burning.
WarmHeart demonstrated to the hotel how to
produce bio char and build and maintain a proper compost.
The organization helped 137 Pillars House
set up a composting area so the hotel can (a) responsibly
manage organic waste by burning at high temperature to produce bio
char (charcoal) and (b) use kitchen vegetable / fruit and salad
waste as part of composting.
Bio char is added to the soil and
increases the fertility and PH of the soil, enabling increased
agricultural productivity and protection against some foliar and
soil-borne diseases.
Non-Toxic Mosquito
Control Program: The hotel worked with Mosquito Lady
Consulting to learn how to use environmentally responsible
measures and products to control and eradicate mosquitos.
Fogging,
a method which is widely used in the fight against mosquitoes in
the region, only kills adult mosquitoes but does nothing to
eradicate their breeding grounds. Fogging is also bad for humans, and
mosquitos are becoming resistant to the chemicals.
The hotel worked with Mosquito Lady Consulting
and acted as mosquito detectives, covering every square inch of
the property.
All potential breeding grounds for mosquitos, such
as areas where water can accumulate, were filled in. Fish have
also been added to all ponds and wells, some areas of the hotel
have been covered with special netting and measures taken to ensure
the pump and pool rooms are as dry as possible.
All these measures
are now being continually monitored by teams within the hotel to
ensure that any new potential breeding grounds are eradicated
immediately.
Anne Arrowsmith,
General Manager of the 137 Pillars House Chiang Mai, is hoping other
hotels in the northern Thai city will take the same steps so that the benefits are spread throughout the
whole Chiang Mai community.
