Tigerair is to launch non-stop flights between
Singapore and Wuxi on 28 April 2016.
With the addition of Wuxi to the network,
Tigerair will fly to 10 destinations in China, including Xi’an,
Ningbo, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Jinan, Nanning, Lijiang, Quanzhou and
Haikou.
Lee Lik Hsin, Tigerair’s CEO, said, “Singapore
has strong trade relations with the important Yangtze River Delta
Economic Zone, of which the metropolitan area comprising Wuxi and
Suzhou is a core population and economic activity centre. Our
non-stop service to Wuxi offers greater connectivity and
convenience to customers as Singapore’s business and bilateral
ties with these two cities continue to grow.”
Wuxi and Suzhou
are important cities in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) Economic
Zone – a pillar of China’s economic growth. Both cities have a
combined population of about 17 million and total GDP of more than
RMB 2 trillion. The cities’ promising growth prospects have led to
Singapore’s investment presence there. The China-Singapore Suzhou
Industrial Park, established in 1994 as the first government to
government bilateral project between China and Singapore, has long
been a sign of strong ties between the two countries. It has since
grown to be a vibrant township that encompasses high tech,
pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, eco-friendly living and
a higher education cluster.
As a tourist destination, Wuxi is
home to Taihu Lake - China’s third largest freshwater lake which
boasts scenic views. Travellers can also get a glimpse of an
ancient world while cruising along the Grand Canal. The historical
canal, which runs from Beijing to Hangzhou, is the longest in the
world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby Suzhou, on the
other hand, is famed for its meticulously designed classical
gardens, which have also been included in UNESCO World Heritage
list. The cities, situated in the historical and fertile Jiangnan
region of China, are also famous for delicacies such as Yangshan
peaches and Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs.
Ticket sales for the
flights, which will be operated every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
and Sunday, start today (10 March 2016), with promotional prices
starting from S$178 per round-trip.
