The Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town,
South Africa, has re-opened its historic Helmsley Wing Suites and
Garden Cottages after being redesigned by interior design firm
Champalimaud.
Maintaining an appealing balance of luxurious
living combined with warm, earthy tones, the spacious Helmsley
suites at the top of Palm Avenue and the Garden Cottages with
their attractive poolside setting have been designed to emulate
the city’s Cape Dutch heritage, against the backdrop of Table
Mountain.
The poolside Cottages were designed to feel like
a private home within a resort, with a fresh, Victorian eye
reflected through a palette of creams and blues. Each individual
suite within the Helmsley Wing pays homage to its historical
Cape Dutch presence, with herringbone hardwood floors, geometric
patterned drapery and rugs, a camel base and crown trim and dark
chocolate doors and windows. Many of the artworks are by local
contemporary artist Kurt Pio.
Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel has hosted a “who’s who” of international
royalty, politicians, celebrities and the jet-set. Since the hotel originally opened in 1899, the “Nellie” as
locals endearingly call it, has been symbolic of traditional South
African hospitality and a classic example of the great age of
grand hotels.
