Boeing has unveiled plans to renew its focus on
the company’s engineers worldwide by dedicating the first two of
new Engineering Career Development Centers that would serve as
training grounds for its technical workforce.
Over the next year, leading up to Boeing’s
100-year anniversary in 2016, the company will open a dozen of
these centers at major sites around the company.
The first two to open are in Huntsville,
Alabama, and Long Beach, California.
The plan is part of an initiative called
Engineering Central, which represents the community of technically
focused professionals working within various parts of Boeing, and
the strategy to provide world-class development and training for
them.
“As our people continue to develop their capabilities
and knowledge, Boeing will become an even stronger and more
competitive company in our second century,” said John Tracy,
Boeing chief technology officer and senior vice president of
Engineering, Operations & Technology, who oversees engineering
within the company. “We have always been a company that values the
career growth and development of our people. With Engineering
Central, Boeing is intensifying its pursuit of engineering
excellence.”
In addition to opening the new training
centers, the strategy calls for emphasizing the use of several
employee development resources, such as Boeing’s Learning Together
Program, a comprehensive corporate education and tuition
assistance program. Employees pursuing most engineering-related
programs at approved university partners are eligible to have
their tuition and other education expenses paid by the company.
By the
end of the year, the company expects to open centers in Seal Beach
and Huntington Beach, California; St. Louis, Missouri; Ridley
Park, Pennsylvania; Charleston, South Carolina; Salt Lake City,
Utah; and in the Puget Sound region of Washington state.
