Auditions to join the 3,000 strong cast for the
opening and closing ceremonies of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth
Games are now underway.
The auditions will put the prospective
cast members through their paces working in large groups under the
direction of Ceremonies’ Artistic Director David Zolkwer and a
team of choreographers who are looking for enthusiastic and
talented cast members to play a crucial part in the ceremonies.
Audition sessions are broken down into several
elements covering voice, dance and performance.
Those who are successful will be offered the
chance to become part of the cast that will represent Glasgow and
Scotland at the opening and closing ceremonies.
Thousands of people will watch the opening
ceremony at Celtic Park on 23 July and the closing ceremony at
Hampden on 3 August, with a potential global television audience
of more than one billion people for each.
Whilst the content of the ceremonies remains
under wraps for now, spectators are being promised two evenings of
entertainment which proudly and playfully reflect the
culture of Glasgow and Scotland in a warm, welcoming way.
Eileen Gallagher, Independent Director, Glasgow
2014 Board and Chair of the Ceremonies, Culture and Queen’s Baton
Relay Committee said, “The opening and closing ceremonies of the
Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will be a global showcase for
Glasgow and Scotland and unforgettable nights for everyone who
sees them. The auditions represent the first stages of the unique
journey the ceremonies cast will share as they get ready to star
on the international stage.”
Financial support to assist with costs will be
made available to successful cast members and will be targeted to
assist participation in the ceremonies by those facing challenges
meeting costs including independent living support, carer costs,
childcare, travel to Glasgow and ensure that they can complete
their experience.
The funding will be independently administered
by Volunteer Scotland and Voluntary Arts Scotland which has
developed detailed application criteria.
