Australasian Safari organisers have added a Safari Challenge to the 2014 event.

The Safari Challenge is designed make the event more accessible to everyday driven 4WDs, with the category requiring basic safety equipment and permitting only minor modifications.

“The category will have people looking differently at what a production vehicle is capable of. A stock standard ute or an ex-mine site 4WD wagon – these are just some of the vehicles that may qualify for the Safari Challenge,” said Event Director, Justin Hunt. “As competitors in this category will be limited to 100kph, being successful will be more about good navigation and clever driving than speed and horsepower. It is a good budget conscious way to experience off-road motorsport, but it will still be tough.”

Safari Challenge competitors will experience at least 80% of the event’s competitive course.

The basic conditions imposed on Safari Challenge competitors are as follows:

• All vehicles must carry safety harnesses and fire extinguishers, although do not require a roll cage.

• This is a ‘production’ class of competition, highly modified vehicles will not be eligible.

• All vehicles must comply with A0 or A1 of the CAMS vehicle categories.

• Vehicles will be penalised for doing speeds in excess of 100kph. This will be monitored via a GPS speed tracking device.

The Australasian Safari is seven tough days of off-road motorsport adventure in regional Western Australia. The 2014 event will run from the 19 to 27 September.
