According to the May 2013 STR Global
Construction Pipeline Report, the Asia Pacific hotel development
pipeline comprises 1,828 hotels totalling 394,856 rooms.
Year-to-date, 188 hotels have opened in the
region with 32,667 rooms. In the remainder of 2013, 451 hotels are
planned to open with 91,318 rooms.
The Upscale segment is projected to open the
most new rooms with 19,316 rooms in 89 hotels, followed by the
Upper Upscale segment (with 17,715 rooms in 60 hotels) and the
Luxury segment (16,190 rooms in 53 hotels).
In 2014, 534 hotels are expected to open in the
region with 116,416 rooms.
Three segments are expected to each open
more than 20,000 new rooms: the Upscale segment (137 hotels with
32,478 rooms); the Upper Upscale segment (89 hotels with 25,590
rooms); and the Luxury segment (84 hotels with 24,195 rooms).
Europe
The Europe hotel development pipeline comprises
792 hotels totalling 131,038 rooms.
Among the Chain Scale segments, the Upscale
segment made up the largest portion of rooms in the total active
pipeline with 23.2% and 30,417 rooms.
Three other segments each accounted for
15% or more of rooms in the total active pipeline: the
Unaffiliated segment (21.9% to 28,730); the Upper Midscale segment
(18.5% with 24,260 rooms); and the Upper Upscale segment (15.1%
with 19,813 rooms).
Three segments each made up more than 15% of
rooms under construction: the Upscale segment (25.4% with 15,241
rooms); the Upper Upscale segment (21.8% with 13,089 rooms); and
the Upper Midscale segment (19.6% with 11,755 rooms).
MEA
The Middle East / Africa hotel development
pipeline comprises 483 hotels totalling 118,496 rooms.
Among the countries in the region, the United
Arab Emirates reported the largest number of rooms under
construction with 18,653 rooms.
Six countries reported more than 2,000 rooms
under construction: Saudi Arabia (17,166 rooms); Egypt (4,841
rooms); Qatar (4,427 rooms); Morocco (2,482 rooms); Jordan (2,456
rooms); and Kuwait (2,065 rooms).
The total active pipeline data for all three
regions includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning
and Planning stages but does not include projects in the
Pre-Planning stage.
