GHM has confirmed that its management contract
for The Strand in Yangon, Myanmar, has been terminated.
Strand Hotel International (SHI), owners
of the 112-year-old property, has decided to take on management of
the hotel locally.
GHM has managed The Strand since September of
1999.
Opened in 1901 by the renowned Sarkies Brothers,
The Strand was a cornerstone of British society in Myanmar during
the colonial era, hosting the likes of Rudyard Kipling, Somerset
Maugham and Lord Mountbatten.
Following a
sensitive renovation of its interiors in the early 1990s, the
hotel re-opened its doors in 1993. GHM co-founder Adrian Zecha was
instrumental in launching the renaissance of the 30-room property.
Under GHMs management, The Strand reclaimed its
earlier renown as the preferred address for well-heeled travellers
to Yangon, and one of the citys most iconic landmarks.
It is with deep regret that we close the book on GHMs
long relationship with The Strand, said GHM President Hans R. Jenni. We have enjoyed many years of collaboration with the
owners of this extraordinary hotel.
