After officially revealing its
11 April 2012 opening date earlier this week, Sands Cotai
Central unwrapped a little more of the mystery surrounding its
opening celebrations, with a sneak peek into one of the key
elements of the event day.
At a meet and greet event Wednesday, members of
the press were introduced to world-renowned sky walkers Jade
Kindar-Martin and wife Karine Mauffrey, who will traverse the
1,700-foot distance between Sands Cotai Central and The Venetian
Macau-Resort- Hotel, while balancing 500-feet above the ground on
a wire less than one inch thick. The pair will start Macaus
first-ever high-wire walk from each building, meeting in the
middle to engage in a key moment of Sands Cotai Centrals opening
ceremony, representing the connection of both sides of the Cotai
Strip.
Kindar-Martin started wire performing at the age
of 14 with
the acclaimed Circus Smirkus Youth Circus in Vermont, USA and
later went on to study wire and circus arts in Canada and France.
He, and fellow high-wire artist Didier Pasquette, set a Guinness
World Record for their double skywalk across Londons Thames River
in 1997. His second Guinness World Record came in 2007, crossing
the half-mile-wide Han River in Seoul, South Korea. After four
years with the world-famous Cirque du Soleil, Kindar-Martin now
performs around the world and prepares to achieve even bigger
walks. He also heads a team of artists offering special rope
access rigging as well as circus acts and unique ambiance for
special events.
After a successful 17-year gymnastics career in
her native France, Mauffrey quickly transformed herself into an
accomplished stuntwoman, performing in Hollywood films, television
series and commercials. An invited member of the renowned and
exclusive United Stuntwomens Association, she is also a veteran
of two Cirque du Soleil shows. She and Kindar-Martin stay busy
raising their two children at their home in the south of France,
named Mas Pinet (which doubles as an artists retreat), while
juggling work demands that regularly take both of them around the
world.
Sands Cotai Central, a new integrated resort, will feature nearly 5,800
rooms and suites from partner hotels Conrad, Sheraton and Holiday
Inn, along with two uniquely-themed gaming centres, expansive
event space, luxury duty-free shopping, world-class dining choices
and entertainment.
