A new intersection on the Tonkin Highway has
opened which will provide additional access to and from the
International Terminal at Perth Airport and should substantially
improve traffic congestion in the local area for road users.
The intersection is located north of the
current Tonkin Highway/Leach Highway intersection and connects
Tonkin Highway to Dunreath Drive on the Perth Airport estate which
leads to the International Terminal.
“We commissioned a report which looked through a
variety of options, and a new traffic light controlled left-in and
right-out access to Tonkin Highway was recommended as the best
option to alleviate congestion in the area,” said Perth Airport Chief Executive Officer, Brad Geatches. “In
addition, traffic modelling was conducted and indicated that the
traffic flow on Tonkin highway would also improve as traffic would
favour the new route and free up Tonkin Highway. We’ve committed
a total investment of A$10 million into the intersection to improve
the flow of traffic in the area and enable a more positive
experience for our customers.”
The intersection will allow an additional access
point to the International Terminal until the state government’s
Gateway WA project commences to improve the safety and efficiency
of the road network servicing Perth Airport.
Mr Geatches said the link road is purely for
transport to and from the International Terminal and people
wishing to access the Domestic Terminals should continue to use
Brearley Avenue.
“The intersection is traffic light controlled
and synchronised with the Tonkin/Leach Highway traffic lights, has
wide accessible lanes and is clearly sign posted,” he said.
