Smiths Detection has won a range of UK airport
security contracts including the installation of advanced
detection systems at a temporary terminal in Heathrow Airport set
up specifically for athletes and officials attending the London
Olympics.
X-ray systems, which scan hand-luggage for
weapons, explosives and more, will help Heathrow handle the
expected surge in passenger numbers, particularly after the games
end in August. They will then be deployed elsewhere at airports
run by BAA, Heathrow’s owner.
The other orders, which also comprise x-ray
scanners and trace and vapour explosive detectors, came from Isle
of Man authorities, and the Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd
which includes Inverness, Dundee, Stornoway and Orkney.
Andrew Lee, Smiths Detection’s Managing Director
UK, said, “The diversity of these orders underlines how Smiths
Detection can offer advanced, cost-effective and flexible
solutions to the varying security challenges faced by the biggest
and smallest airports.”
