Michele De Witt, Director of the South African
office of Horwath HTL, has been elected as Chairperson of the
Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa – responsible
for the Western and Northern Cape provinces in South Africa.
The association was established in 1949
and is recognised by decision and policy makers in government and
the industry as the official voice of the Southern Africa
hospitality industry. The role of the association is to seek
growth as an inclusive industry and promote the development and
growth of a sustainable trading environment. As such they engage
and lobby both local, provincial and national government regarding
policy that affects the industry and have successfully affected
change in legislation passed over the years.
The association holds a membership in these two
regions in excess of 700 segmented into five groups: hotels, small
accommodation, restaurants & catering, allied/supplier members,
and a youth segment that Michele was involved in establishing
about two/three years ago. Her election as the regional
chairperson also has a requirement to fulfill a seat on the
National Board of the Association.
Michele said, “I am delighted to have been given
this opportunity to serve the hospitality industry in Southern
African and to keep hospitality in the forefront of businesses
driving growth in the region. The performance of the hospitality
sector is incredibly important to the wider economy and we need to
have the support of local and regional government in making sure
we have the best environment to train, support and growth all
areas of the industry. I am looking forward to using the role to
reach out to business leaders across the region and support the
efforts of the many thousands of hospitality industry colleagues.”
