According to the November 2012 STR Global
Construction Pipeline Report, the Asia Pacific hotel development
pipeline comprises 1,748 hotels totalling 377,036 rooms.
The total active pipeline data includes projects
in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but
does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.
Year-to-date 2012, 664 hotels have opened in the
Asia Pacific region with 133,607 rooms. In the remainder of the
year, 75 more hotels are expected to open with 14,302 rooms. The
Unaffiliated segment is expected to open the most rooms in the
remainder of the year with 25 hotels and 3,559 rooms, followed by
the Upscale segment (17 hotels with 2,950 rooms) and the Luxury
segment (11 hotels with 2,704 rooms).
In 2013, 667 hotels are expected to open in the
region with 130,665 rooms. The most rooms are planned in the Upper
Upscale segment, which expects 102 hotels with 31,362 rooms to
open. Two other segments expect more than 20,000 rooms to open in
2013: the Upscale segment (166 hotels with 30,708 rooms) and the
Luxury segment (79 hotels with 25,611 rooms).
Caribbean/Mexico
The Caribbean/Mexico hotel development pipeline
comprises 122 hotels totaling 18,944 rooms.
Among the countries in the region,
Haiti reported the largest expected growth (+95.7%), if all
rooms in the country's total active pipeline open (798 rooms).
Five other countries reported expected growth of 15% or
more: Anguilla (+30.9% with 220 rooms); St. Kitts/Nevis
(+27.5% with 435 rooms); Bahamas (+17.9% with 2,488
rooms); Dominica (+15.9% with 100 rooms); and Aruba (+15.4% with 980 rooms).
Central/South
America
The
Central/South America hotel development pipeline comprises 230
hotels totalling 35,891 rooms.
Among the region's countries, Panama reported the
largest expected growth (+31.9%) if all rooms in the
country's total active pipeline opened (4,708 rooms). Four other
countries reported more than 10-percent expected room growth: Paraguay (+23.9% with 496 rooms); Colombia (+18.5%
with 3,953 rooms); Uruguay (+16.0% with 968 rooms); and
Brazil (+10.1% with 18,609 rooms).
Europe
The Europe hotel development pipeline comprises 855
hotels totalling 142,020 rooms.
Among the Chain Scale segments, the Upscale segment
accounted for the most rooms in the region's total active pipeline with 21.8% and 30,928 rooms. Three other segments each
accounted for more than 15% of rooms in the total active pipeline: the Unaffiliated segment (20.2% with 28,636
rooms); the Upper Midscale segment (17.8% with 25,253
rooms); and the Upper Upscale segment (15.5% with 21,952
rooms).
The Upscale segment made up the largest portion of
rooms in the In Construction phase with 24.5% and 13,085
rooms, followed by the Upper Upscale segment (23.7% with
12,637 rooms) and the Upper Midscale segment (19.4% with
10,380 rooms).
Middle East/Africa
The Middle East/Africa hotel
development pipeline comprises 480 hotels totalling 119,932 rooms.
Among the
countries in the region, the United Arab Emirates reported the
largest number of rooms under construction with 20,030 rooms. Five
other countries ended the month with more than 2,000 rooms under
construction: Saudi Arabia (16,496 rooms); Egypt (4,692 rooms);
Qatar (3,764 rooms); Jordan (2,447 rooms); and Morocco (2,329
rooms).
