With so much ucertainty about how the
devastating floods that have engulfed many parts of northern
Thailand, as well as the outskirts of Bangkok, may effect the
heart of the capital city over the coming days and weeks, the 13th
Vertical Marathon 2011, which was scheduled to be held on
Saturday, 29 October 2011 at the Banyan Tree Bangkok Hotel, has
been postponed until Sunday, 22 January 2012.
Banyan Tree Bangkok, the organizers of this
annual much awaited event which raises funds for the “HIV Formula
Feeding Fund”, a Thai Red Cross initiative under the patronage of
HRH Princess Soamsawali, said in a statement that it “wishes to apologize for any inconvenience
caused” and thanks all participants for their support.
Many parts of northern Thailand have been
affected by some of the worse flooding Thailand has ever seen, and with the waters already engulfing many parts of the wealthy
suburbs just a few kilometres to the north of the Bangkok city
centre, there is a lot of concern over what may happen in the next
few days and weeks. Yesterday, the old international airport -
Don
Muang - now used mainly for domestic and cargo flights, as well as
by the military, was closed until the end of the month at
least, and the evacuees that were being housed there are being
evacuated to elsewhere.
Airlines have also been very slow to react to the flooding in
Thailand not allowing passengers to change their tickets
without being charged as per their ticket restrictions. But now,
some leading and forward thinking airlines such as Singapore
Airlines, have started waiving these fees giving a little more
flexibility to their customers’ options.
