According to the August 2011 STR Global
Construction Pipeline Report, the Asia Pacific hotel development
pipeline comprises 1,290 hotels totalling 310,230 rooms.
Among the region's markets, Shanghai, China,
ended the month with the largest number of rooms in the In
Construction phase with 10,838 rooms. Four other markets reported
a significant number of rooms under construction: Bangkok,
Thailand (5,216 rooms); New Delhi, India (5,088 rooms); Beijing,
China (4,746 rooms); and Manila, Philippines (3,015 rooms).
Caribbean / Mexico
The Caribbean/Mexico hotel development pipeline
comprises 129 hotels totalling 18,994 rooms.
As of 31
July, the region opened 10 projects with 928 rooms in 2011. There
are 26 more projects comprising 4,104 rooms expected to open
during 2011. In 2012, there are 46 projects with 6,482 rooms
scheduled to open.
Among the Chain Scale segments, the
Upscale segment (7 projects with 1,453 rooms) and the Unaffiliated
segment (5 projects with 1,204 rooms) are expecting the largest
number of rooms to open during the remainder of 2011. In 2012, the
Upscale segment is expected to open the largest number of rooms
(12 projects with 1,722 rooms), followed by the Upper Midscale
segment (14 projects with 1,603 rooms).
Central / South
America
The Central/South America hotel
development pipeline comprises 172 hotels totalling 27,728 rooms.
Among the Chain Scale segments, the Upscale segment
reported the largest portion of rooms in the total active pipeline
with 25.2% and 6,984 rooms. Three other segments each
accounted for more than 10% of rooms in the total active
pipeline: the Midscale segment (23.5% with 6,505 rooms);
the Upper Upscale segment (23.3% with 6,458 rooms); and the
Upper Midscale segment (12.8% with 3,542 rooms).
Europe / Central
Asia
The Europe hotel development pipeline
comprises 819 hotels totalling 132,234 rooms.
Among
the countries in the region, Azerbaijan ended the month with the
largest expected room growth (+63.3%) if all 1,601 rooms in the total active pipeline open. Other countries that reported
significant expected room growth:
Kazakhstan (+25.1% with
1,245 rooms); Russia (+20.4% with 16,236 rooms); United
Kingdom (+8.2% with 39,836 rooms); and Romania (+7.6% with 1,965 rooms).
Middle
East / Africa
The Middle East/Africa hotel development
pipeline comprises 463 hotels totalling 126,090 rooms.
Among the markets in the region, Abu Dhabi, United Arab
Emirates, ended the month with the largest expected room growth
(+90.3%) if all 13,534 rooms in the total active pipeline
open. Other countries to report significant expected room growth:
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (+87.6% with 5,531 rooms); Dubai, UAE
(+44.6% with 26,642 rooms); Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (+44.6% with
2,733 rooms); and Muscat, Oman (+37.5% with 6,049 rooms).
