The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, has completed
the refurbishment of its main lobby and reception area.
All new upholstery, carpeting and furniture has
been chosen by renowned interior designer Jeffrey Wilkes, the same
creative mind who was behind the 2009 renovation of all the 338
guestrooms in the River Wing Building.
The design brief clearly stipulated that the
“DNA” of the 135 year old hotel be preserved, and
combined with a modern interpretation on traditional themes.
The floor-to-ceiling windows that face towards the Chao
Phraya River, the two royal elephants guarding the lift landing
and the historical “temple bell” chandeliers all remain as before,
faithful to the hotel’s heritage.
The decorative
enhancements are set against a proud Thai history, showcasing an
unmistakable Thai-inspired flair and atmosphere. The new interior
design is further enhanced during evening hours through the
installation of a lighting system which highlights the vibrant new colour scheme of burnt sepia, crimson reds and cool grays. In
addition Silver Naga and cream marble coffee tables have been artfully placed throughout the comfortable seating arrangements.
The reception counters have undergone a dramatic
transformation, using contemporary Thai materials and fabrics.
Backlit blue glass tiled counters contrast beautifully with the
scarlet Thai silk on the walls and the delicate crystal
chandeliers with Thai motifs suspended from the ceiling above the
teakwood reception desks.
Other areas that were part of the
scope of the refurbishment include the book kiosk, the spa and
Wellness reservation desk, the Oriental Corner Cake counter and
the addition of luxury retail showcases.
“The results of
the refurbishment will ensure that the Lobby at Mandarin Oriental,
Bangkok will continue to be a landmark in the city,” said General
Manager Jan Goessing. “The Lobby is widely seen as the Living Room
for sophisticated travellers, many of whom have walked through the
hotel’s iconic doors over many generations.”
