Finnair has started negotiations with Swissport,
a Swiss company specialised in ground handling, regarding its
baggage and apron services at Helsinki Airport.
If agreement is reached between Finnair and
Swissport, the business would transfer from current handler Barona
Handling to Swissport.
Employees currently working for Barona Handling
would transfer to the service of Swissport under their present
terms of employment. Finnair's aim is to conclude the negotiations by
the end of the year.
"Swissport is a global professional
that has strong expertise in ground handling services. With
cooperation we aim for even better quality and cost-efficiency,"
said Finnair's COO Ville Iho.
Developing its partnership
network is part of Finnair's strategy of structural change that
aims to significantly lower its cost base and improve quality to
support its growth.
Finnairs goal is to grow its Asian traffic
from 74 weekly flights to 140 and double its Asian traffic revenue
by 2020.
Swissport International provides ground
services for around 100 million passengers and 3.2 million tonnes
of cargo a year on behalf of some 650 client-companies in the
aviation sector. With a workforce of around 35,000 personnel,
Swissport is active at 184 stations in 36 countries on five
continents, and generated consolidated operating revenue of CHF
1.7 billion in 2010.
