LAN Airlines has finished the installation of
winglets - high-tech devices which are attached to airplane wings
in order to reduce their aerodynamic drag - on all of its existing
long-haul, Boeing 767 fleet, with a US$80 million investment.
This
initiative has allowed the airline to attain an efficiency of
approximately 4% in the use of fuel by the fleet and, therefore, a
reduction of the airline’s CO2 emissions.
By year’s end, the airline projects a reduction
of some 113,000 tons of CO2 just by implementing this solution. In
2010, this measure allowed LAN to reduce its CO2 emissions by more
than 93,000 tons.
All future Boeing 767 aircraft added to
LAN’s long-haul fleet will incorporate this technology.
LAN’s Vice President
of Services and Operations Enrique Elsaca said, “We are happy to
have been able to successfully install winglets in all 39 of our
Boeing 767 long-haul aircraft.” Elsaca added that “this process
marks an important milestone for the Company, as the installation
was done at LAN’s maintenance base in Santiago, Chile, in
compliance with the highest standards of the global airline
industry.”
