A special Singapore Pavilion Day will be held at
the Shanghai World Expo on 7 August 2010, in the run-up to
Singapore’s 45th National Day celebrations.
During the day, visitors will be treated to a
visual “Urban Symphony” which will take place at the square
outside the Singapore Pavilion. Through richly-textured costumes
designed by local designer Frederick Lee and a combination of
contemporary music set against traditional dance movements, this
visual treat will showcase various dance performances depicting
the city’s cultural diversity - a unique blend of East and West
underscored by elements of tradition and modernity. In addition,
the percussion, wind and brass instruments that accompany the
performances will portray Singapore’s multi-ethnicity coming
together in a colourful finale.
The celebrations will culminate with an evening
concert. The star-studded concert will see some of Singapore’s
most successful home- grown music artistes, such as A-Do and Tanya
Chua who are featured in the Singapore Pavilion theme song, “Every
Touching Moment”, BY-2, Kelvin Tan Wei Lian and Jocie Guo Mei Mei.
Mavis Hee, a veteran singer with a strong following in the China
market, will also make a special appearance.
Tanya who is also STB’s Brand Ambassador in the
Greater China market said, “Whenever I think of Singapore, I
feel a certain warmth in the heart because it is where my family
and friends are. My forefathers came from Indonesia in search of a
better life, just like many Singaporeans descended from
immigrants. Just like it welcomed my grandparents, the city
continues to welcome people from all corners of the world. As a
Singaporean, I am very proud of what we have achieved together as
a nation and am excited to be representing Singapore at this
concert.”
Ms Leong See Kay, Director of Singapore Pavilion
World Expo 2010 added, "Many Chinese know of Singapore’s rapid
economic growth, our unique urban solutions and how many of its
early residents were immigrants from China. But there is also a
lesser known and softer side of Singapore - our thriving music
scene. So we're delighted to be able to showcase the best of
Singapore's homegrown performing talents at this event. Not only will we hear their popular hits, the
artistes will also share their special stories on what makes
Singapore home. We hope this event will attract more visitors to
our Pavilion, which has just been refreshed for an even better
visitor experience."
From 7 to 10 August, pavilion visitors will be
presented with 10,000 special edition collar pins and be
entertained with interactive activities such as face painting,
balloon sculpting and figurine modeling.
Visitors can also enjoy the enhanced experience
at the Singapore Pavilion. At the ground level, visitors can now
catch a glimpse of Singapore’s vibrant landscape through an
installation showcasing signature events, including the
National Day Parade, different ethnic festivals, and the Formula
One night race. New highlights include a life-size Renault
F1 race car, colourful costume displays, and exciting
visuals portraying Singapore's eventful calendar and rich
multi-cultural heritage.
As visitors are guided along the ramp to the
second floor, they will be taken on a historical journey of
Singapore’s progress from past to present, as told by a series of
25 portraits depicting Singaporeans, famous personalities and
familiar local landmarks. Visitors to the pavilion can also
experience the excitement of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games
taking place in Singapore from 14 to 26 August. They will have the
chance to pose for a photograph at the winner’s platform flanked
by Lyo and Merly, the official mascots for the games.
