Curfews in Thailand Lifted

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Videos Monday, 31 May 2010

The curfew that has been in place on Bangkok and 23 other provinces within Thailand has been lifted by the Thai Government. The State of Emergency however, remains firmly in place.

The curfew was introduced after the Thai military moved in on the red shirt protestors in the centre of the capital city. At first, the curfew was from 20:00 to 05:00 but that changed a few times, finishing as a 00:00 to 04:00 curfew that ended on Saturday, 29 May 2010.

Unfortunately, neither the lifting of the curfew, nor the State of Emergency that remains in place, makes much, if any, difference to travellers.

The extremely complex situation that has already caused so much bloodshed, and shown the world just how deeply divided the country really is, is in no way resolved. And because of that, it is impossible to say with any certainty what will happen next. Therefore, we can only recommend that people who are considering a visit to Bangkok to very carefully monitor the situation.
