Benefiting from robust demand during the
traditional summer peak season, aircraft movements at Hong Kong
International Airport in August 2010 reached a monthly high of 27,135,
up 14.5% from a year ago and setting a new daily average record of
880.
During the month, passenger and cargo volumes
continued their upswings, registering year-on-year growth of 9.2%
and 17% respectively to 4.7 million and 346,000 tonnes.
For
the passenger market, Hong Kong residents and visitors registered
double-digit year-on-year growth in August, increasing 19% and 12%
respectively. Passenger traffic to / from the Chinese Mainland and
South East Asia continued to perform particularly well among all
major regions.
Stanley Hui Hon-chung, Chief Executive
Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong, said, "In August we saw
not just robust air traffic, but also strong demand for
cross-boundary land and sea transport at HKIA, which both set a
record monthly high. The number of passengers using the SkyPier
ferry terminal to travel between the Pearl River Delta (PRD)
region and HKIA was 227,000, which is 33% more than the same
period last year. Also, 163,000 passengers used cross-boundary
coach and limousine services, which is a 41% increase over last
August. These figures further affirm HKIA's status as a
multi-modal transport hub and a preferred gateway to the Mainland
with great connectivity to the PRD region."
Mr Hui added,
"We anticipate the coming months to continue seeing growth as
travel usually peaks at year-end, and in particular, during major
festivals or holidays such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and the
National Day Golden Week holidays."
Cargo growth in August
was mainly driven by the strong performance of exports, which
surged by 29% year on year. All major trading partners showed
double-digit annual growth, with Europe and North America
continuing to outperform other regions. During the month, imports
also saw year-on-year growth of 12%.
For the first eight
months of this year, HKIA has handled a cumulative total of 33.9
million passenger trips and 2.7 million tonnes of cargo, representing growth of 10.3% and 30.9%. Air traffic movements also
grew by 7.3% to 198,775.
