Tahiti Airport Strike: Air Tahiti Nui Operates Limited Number of Flights

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Videos Wednesday, 16 June 2010

Air Tahiti Nui has commenced operating a limited number of flights to help move passengers stranded by a strike which has closed the main airport in Papeete, French Polynesia.

The airline has secured approval from the Government of French Polynesia to begin moving stranded passengers to and from Papeete, Los Angeles, Auckland and Tokyo, as well as from Los Angeles to Paris. Last night 1,600 passengers were carried into and from Papeete.

It must be noted however that this is just a dispensation to ease the backlog of passengers, and does not yet enable a return to full scheduled services by Air Tahiti Nui.

The strike by government employees at the airport is continuing, and the temporary flight schedules are subject to change.

For passengers travelling from Papeete to New Zealand and on to Australia, flight TN 101 is scheduled to depart Tahiti early on Wednesday local time, arriving in Auckland at 10.55am on Thursday (8.55 am Sydney), with onward connections to Australian home ports.

Flight TN 102 is scheduled to depart Auckland at 2.05pm on Thursday (12.05pm Sydney time) bound for Papeete.

Additional flights are expected to be confirmed as approval is secured.

Because over 3,600 passengers have been stranded throughout the Air Tahiti Nui network, priority is being given to moving those passengers who have been stranded for the longest time.
