A multi-million pound car rental centre
officially opened in Edinburgh on Friday, offering a one stop shop
for passengers at Scotland’s busiest airport.
Rally driver
and TV presenter Penny Mallory opened the new centre which brings together all of the airport's car
rental companies under one roof.
Built by Keir Group, the
development is part of a planned £100 million investment by
Edinburgh Airport over the next five years.
A covered
walkway links the new centre, one of the largest of its kind in
the UK, to Edinburgh’s main terminal.
The centre also
includes a new car rental pick up and return area, conveniently
located next to the Hilton Hotel.
Work is also progressing on a £41 million departure
lounge extension at the airport, with the first phase set to open
to passengers in November. The development will offer more
space to relax, a wider choice of bars, shops and restaurants and
a new purpose built security search area.
Almost 20 new
services to Spain, Italy, Croatia, Malta, Denmark, France, Germany
and Greece are set to take off from Edinburgh this year, boosting
business and leisure opportunities. The new services include
Bologna, Palma, Rome Ciampino, Copenhagen, Zadar (Croatia),
Sardinia, Venice and Dusseldorf.
Airport Managing Director Gordon Dewar
said, “These are
exciting times for Scotland’s busiest airport. With almost 20
new routes already confirmed and more in the pipeline, Edinburgh
Airport now serves more destinations than at any time in its
history, connecting Scotland with Europe, North America and North
Africa.
Our substantial and ongoing investment in the airport
will help position Edinburgh as a world class business and leisure
destination, with an airport that rivals Europe’s best regional
gateways.”
