The Westin Auckland, Lighter Quay hotel has won the Tourism and Leisure Property Excellence Award at the annual New Zealand Property
Council Awards. The award recognises the hotel and the $300 million Lighter Quay development on Auckland’s waterfront, an ambitious seven
year development of the Auckland waterfront by Melview founder and Managing Director Mr Nigel McKenna.
Designed by Peddle Thorp Architects, Martin Hughes and Tom Skyring (Interior Designers) Mr McKenna paid tribute to these designers “both for
their design excellence and for the fact that they didn’t object to my quite hands-on approach to building design and
fit-out.”
Judges for the awards said the 172 room 5-star Westin “is a stunning luxury hotel forming the final piece in Melview’s Lighter Quay development
of four buildings located around a private marina on the Auckland Viaduct Harbour edge.
“The hotel offers a full range of facilities including gymnasium and lap pool overlooking the feature internal waterway. Quality and strong
attention to detail in the design and construction phase has ensured a very successful development which has maximised its waterfront location
and produced excellent financial returns. This is an impressive development which enhances the Auckland and New Zealand tourism industry”
they said.
The hotel offers a full range of facilities including Senses Day Spa, Q Restaurant, The Office Bar, Toast Café and a number of meeting facilities.
The New Zealand Property Council Awards are recognised as
a premium acknowledgment of outstanding property developments in New
Zealand, and one of the biggest nights on the property calendar attended by over 850 guests including the Auckland Mayor.
According to the Property Council New Zealand, Excellence Award Winners are presented to properties that are deemed to be “the best of the
best in their chosen category, and that symbolise excellence within the property industry.”
Mr McKenna said “this award recognises excellence and the arrival of the Westin signifies how important this destination is for international hotel
brands.”
“We firmly believe that tourism is New Zealand’s most important industry in the future, both for investment and employment.”
Melview Developments is
one of the largest hotel developers in Oceania, with over 2,000 rooms either built, under construction or in the pipeline.
The company is now focused on two significant developments in the South Island, Kawarau Falls Station in Queenstown and McArthur Ridge in Central
Otago.
Last year Melview Developments, Quadrant Hotel Auckland was awarded The Property Council Award of Excellence for multi-unit residential.
