Northwest Airlines'
standard travel agency commissions will be eliminated for tickets sold on or after October 1, 2008 in Japan.
The
airline said the decision has been made as part of an ongoing company-wide initiative to reduce costs, including those related to sales and
distribution.
Jeffrey S. Bernier, Northwest Airlines’ Managing Director Japan, said, “As the environment continues to change, we must be more
competitive in order to maintain our leadership position in Japan. This step will lead to the establishment of a more robust travel market in
the future, which will allow us to better serve our customers and help offset the skyrocketing cost of oil.”
Northwest Airlines is one of the world’s largest airlines with hubs at Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Memphis, Tokyo and Amsterdam, and
approximately 1,400 daily departures.
The
airline is a member of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance. Northwest and its travel partners serve more than 1,000 cities in excess of 160 countries on six continents.
