Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Monday, 25 August 2008

When it comes to any family holiday, one of the main headaches is simply deciding where to go. Everyone has a different idea of what makes a great break; the kids might want sea, sand and lots to do, whereas mom and dad might want a tranquil escape with some interesting sights to see. South Australia is a destination that can satisfy the whole family's needs. Based on the types of holiday most families look for, here are some ideas and suggestions to help tempt you to visit South Australia.

Ponies and Fairies: Book your child's next birthday gathering at Ponies Love Parties at Littlehampton. Travel the farm in a pony carriage, catch a ride on a fire engine, enjoy a spin on the merry go rounds and feed the friendly farm animals. Trail rides, kids and adults non-riders to experienced, ride amongst beautiful hills scenery. Relive your childhood at Fairyland Village in Lobethal winding your way through bushland past live displays of all your favourite fairytales. Walking trail winds its way past 17 small huts, each containing a life size display of one of the classic fairytales like snow white, the three little pigs and sleeping beauty. Each display is presented in a setting of antiques and memorabilia with a story board for parents to read to their children. There are deer and kangaroos on the outer fence lines, peacocks, geese and pheasants in the bird enclosure and Rum our sulphur-crested cockatoo to greet you as you pass by.

Beach Fun: Imagine a beach and a house of fun. Now fuse them together and imagine what your child’s reaction will be when you tell them such a place exists. Make a trip to Glenelg, one of Adelaide’s most popular beach destinations where you’ll find the Beach House, where kids can spend pleasurable hours of fun. Nearby, you can sign up with Temptation Sailing. Temptation was one of the first vessels in South Australia to be given a dolphin swim license and can help you and the kids get up close to these friendly and curious creatures.

Animal Haven: Little ones will enjoy the Hahndorf Farm Barn in the Adelaide Hills to experience life on the farm and learn about native and farm animals. Then make your way to Tanunda in the Barossa and pay a visit to the Aussie who has trained his own beautiful sheepdogs and named them Norm's Coolies. Enjoy the love between Norm and his troupe of faithful companions as they win the hearts of the audience with their willingness to give an all-out performance.

River Cruise: Like Enid Blyton’s River of Adventure, children will find that cruising on the Murray River as equally as fun if not exciting. Wake in the morning surrounded by gentle waters and fresh air, with the whole day ahead of you. Plot your route together with the kids, absorbing the sights, and relaxing on deck of a houseboat. A houseboat holiday is the ultimate getaway and you can choose from hundreds of houseboats accommodating two to 12 people and ranging from budget to luxury. Houseboats can be hired from either the Murraylands or the Riverland regions. To become a houseboat captain during your holiday, all you need is a driver's license.

Island Adventure: Enjoy a holiday at Penneshaw, a pretty coastal village on the north east Dudley Peninsula on Kangaroo Island with spectacular views of the South Australian mainland. The regular SeaLink ferry service from the mainland arrives here, making it the perfect location from which to explore the rest of Kangaroo Island. You'll find a great array of accommodation, right in the heart of Penneshaw or one of the surrounding bays, and there's also good shopping and friendly places to eat. At night, head out to see Penneshaw's colony of Little Penguins - tours are conducted nightly from the Penguin Interpretive Centre.

Choo Choo!: Ride on the Cockle Train travels along the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula. The coastline is dotted with delightful towns, Goolwa, Middleton, Port Elliot and Victor Harbor - all framed beautifully by the windows on this historic train. Stopovers are available at all these stations to visit local tourist attractions or stay onboard and enjoy the trip between Victor Harbor and Goolwa.
