After more than two months of refurbishment,
the Summer Palace at Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong recently re-opened to offer diners
traditional Cantonese cuisine in a refreshing environment.
While retaining the understated elegance of the restaurant, the HK$15-million refurbishment has enhanced Summer Palace with the grandeur of
Chinese heritage and a touch of modernity. On entering the restaurant, guests are greeted by a large carved screen with a mythical scene of
golden phoenix soaring in the clouds. The characteristic gold colour tone is adorned with the lively butterfly motif on the silk wall panels, on
which mirrors covered with cloud-shaped ornaments flank Chinese paintings. The signature round pillar in the centre remains a focus
in the restaurant, and is now embellished with delicately carved wall finishes of floral
pattern to echo the surrounding walls and carved screen.
Contrasting with the traditional Chinese dcor are the Viennese teardrop chandeliers with an oriental accent of brass adornment and jade rings.
Sparkling under the chandeliers, the gilded scarlet chairs and other modern furniture pieces create a welcoming dining atmosphere in harmony
with the rich sense of Chinese culture.
The refurbished Summer Palace continues to present the best of Cantonese specialties expertly prepared by Chef Lee Keung and his kitchen
brigade. Most of the signature dishes, including Chilled crystal ham, Crispy chicken with spicy herbs and Chilled sago cream with mango juice
and pomelo remain on the menu. A number of chefs recommendations such as Roasted Yunnan ham with deep-fried custard, Roast honey pork
with goose liver and Pan-fried egg with birds nest, as well as an extensive tea and beverage menu, are also available during both lunch and
dinner.
Summer Palace on level five of
the Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong has seating for 180 in its main dining area and four private rooms. It is open daily
for lunch and dim sum from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and for dinner from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.
