Abacus International
has won the Singapore HEALTH (Helping Employees Achieve Life-Time Health) Gold Award 2008 for its excellent
Workplace Health Promotion (WHP) programmes.
This award, presented by the Health Promotion Board, recognises organisations which help their employees lead healthy lives.
Abacus International’s Director of Human Resources, Ms Helen Sim received the award from Mr Lucas Chow, Chairman, Health Promotion
Board, in a ceremony held at Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre
on Thursday.
The company was honoured with the Gold Award based on high scores it achieved under the Health Promotion Board’s WHP programme
assessment criteria. These include evaluating elements such as how comprehensive the WHP programmes are, senior management’s initiatives
as well as the support for policy changes to ensure a healthy workplace.
Ms Sim
said, “Abacus started WHP programmes in 2002 and we have seen its positive impact on our staff’s physical, mental and emotional
well-being.
The programmes have also fostered a closer bond among employees and strengthened team-spirit as staff interacted during activities and
moved towards a common goal of improving their health. These have helped strengthen Abacus as a company and made it a more vibrant place
to work.”
Abacus International offers its staff a wide range of health and wellness activities such as regular Fruit Days when the fruit of the month is
distributed to every employee together with information on its health benefits. Employees also attend information sessions on topics ranging
from stretching exercises that can be done at the work desk to cooking healthy meals. The company allows its facilities to be used for lunchtime
yoga, pilates and kickboxing classes and has a corporate health screening plan for employees.
This is the fifth year Abacus is honoured with a Singapore HEALTH award and the second time the Gold Award has been received by the
company. It has been a recipient of this award since 2003.
