Airbus
has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to support 'The Green
Wave', a worldwide educational campaign for children and youth. Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO and Dr Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive
Secretary for the Convention on Biological Diversity, signed the partnership at Farnborough International Airshow, where the theme is
Sustainable Aviation.
The Green Wave initiative will provide support to schools around the world to educate their students on the crucial role that protecting the
diversity of life on earth plays in our lives and futures, and will encourage them to plant trees and to celebrate the International Day for
Biodiversity at 10am on 22nd May each year.
Airbus’ initial involvement is to help raise public awareness of The Green Wave initiative through a joint global communications campaign. Airbus
will then work with airlines and other industry members to further develop support for The Green Wave campaign and the
CBD.
Air transport contributes some 2% of man-made CO2 emissions and
Airbus is using its
experience in improving fuel efficiency and employing new technologies to limit the environmental impact of aviation. Airbus will continue to
actively work through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialised agency of the United Nations which sets standards for
global air transport, to address aviations contribution to climate change.
Dr Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of Convention on Biological Diversity said “The Green Wave campaign aims at establishing strong links
between children and nature as well human and international solidarity between the schools of the world. I applaud Airbus’ commitment to join
us in planting a love of nature in the minds of children and young people. Investing in children and youth today ensures educated citizens
tomorrow.”
Sensitive to its position as an industry leader, Airbus strives to be an
eco-efficient enterprise. To that end, Airbus became one of the first aeronautics
company's in the world to have earned the ISO 14001 environmental certification for all production sites and products for the entire life cycle.
