On Monday, the Dubai Chapter of Skal International gathered at the Qamardeen Hotel in Dubai, for their monthly networking luncheon. The event showcased two upcoming events, the 4th International Tourism Development Forum for People with Special Needs and the Arabian Travel Market 2008.

Speaking to an audience of 40 industry professionals, Mr Ghassan Suleiman Amhaz, Senior Officer, Press Relations & Communications, Dubai Airports urged hoteliers, airlines and tour operators to participate in the upcoming conference about Special Needs Tourism in the Middle East next month.

According to Mr Amhaz, some 30 million individuals are disabled in the Arab countries reflecting the potential for a further US$3 billion per year for the tourism sector if proper services and facilities were provided. The Tourism Development Forum is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and will be held at Le Meridien Dubai on 21st May, 2008.

Also speaking at the event was Mr Lloyd Kenyon, Regional Account Manager – Middle East & North Africa, Reed Travel Exhibitions who provided an overview of the fast approaching Arabian Travel Market (6-9 May).

Mr Kenyon explained changes made to the exhibition timings and floor plan. His presentation met with strong questioning from the crowd about the balance between property developers and travel trade.

“The general consensus of the crowd was that the Arabian Travel Market has turned into another platform for the big name property developers. Reed Travel quelled concerns outlining that the property developers with a specific tourism focus would be encouraged to continue to participate and that this year they would have their own dedicated area.” said Mr Amit Arora, President, Skal International.

“Transportation surrounding the event, whether it be shuttles, taxis or parking, was also a hot topic. It is clear that Dubai is expanding so rapidly that now the events industry has to consider logistics very carefully. A failure to do so, will be at their own peril” he added.

Skal is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. Its members, the industry's managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest.
