Popular London hangout, ZUMA, to Open in Hong Kong this Spring

Travel News Asia Tuesday, 6 March 2007

Zuma, Londons award winning Japanese restaurant and bar concept is opening its doors in Hong Kong this spring.

Located in the heart of Central at The Landmark, the 10,000 square foot split-level space will serve contemporary Japanese cuisine from award winning chef and co-founder Rainer Becker.

Rainer Becker and the Waney family launched the original Zuma in 2002 in the hip Knightsbridge district of London, where it has fast become one of Londons most desirable and fashionable restaurants. Recent recognition includes Restaurant of the Year at the Tatler Restaurant Awards and Sommelier of the Year for Alessandro Marchesan at the Harpers & Queen Restaurant Awards.

Bringing this completely new take on Japanese dining to Hong Kong, Zuma will add a sophisticated twist on the Japanese izakaya style and concept of informal eating and drinking.

Dishes will be authentic but not traditional, with an emphasis on simple presentation and flavour through quality ingredients. There will be no set protocol on ordering from the menu and instead dishes will be designed with the concept of sharing in mind.

Zuma will be split over two floors, creating a separate restaurant, and lounge and bar area.

Zuma restaurant will have three separate food preparation areas and will cater for a total of 145 people; 70 at tables, 11 at a Sushi Counter, 12 at a Robata Counter, 32 on an outdoor terrace, and 12 and 8 in private dining rooms.

Both the Sushi Counter and the Robata Counter will invite guests to watch their meals being freshly prepared. The Robata grill will offer a fine selection of quality meats and poultry, market seafoods and seasonal vegetables served with Zumas signature sauces, whilst the Sushi Bar will tempt people with a variety of market fresh sashimi, nigiri and maki sushi.

Zuma restaurant on the fifth floor will boast an exclusive all-year-round outdoor terrace where guests can dine. Shared with the Landmark Mandarin Oriental, the terrace area can be accessed only through Zuma or the hotel. It will offer an oasis of calm for customers to dine and enjoy a drink above the bustle of the city. As a multi-purpose space, the outdoor terrace will be able to host private cocktail events.

A place to see and be seen, Zumas lounge and bar on level 6 will be the venue for pre-dinner champagne and cocktails - relaxed and chilled in the afternoon; things will pick up in the evenings through to late night when featured DJs will mix.

The lounge and bar will feature a variety of seating areas for Hong Kongs savvy customers, catering for a total of 95 with bar stools, sophisticated lounging areas and a semi-private room.

The lounge and bar will offer the same menu as Zuma restaurant during lunch and dinner but in addition, a selection of savory and sweet snacks will be available throughout the day. The lounge and bar will be an ideal space for private launch events and celebrations for up to 110 people.

Zumas beverage lists have been created with Japanese ingredients and culture in mind. With a wine cellar of over 2,000 bottles of wine, and 10 vintage wines served by the glass, guests will be able to sample the finest selection of international wines. A resident Sake Kikizakeshi will be on hand to serve premium sake by the glass, including Zumas own label- designed specifically to compliment Zuma dishes.

Designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu of Studio Glitt in collaboration with Tokyo design firm Super Potato, Zumas style will be clean and minimal. Muramatsu has used natural materials - stone, iron, wood and glass to merge traditional Japanese design with Western influences including vast floor to ceiling glass windows looking out over Zumas exclusive outdoor terrace.

Zuma restaurant will also offer two private dining rooms for entertaining, the largest of which seats 12 persons and is situated in front of the main open kitchen so guests can enjoy the full drama of watching their meals being prepared.
