Peter Brokenshire receives Tourism Ministers Special Award

Travel News Asia Tuesday, 31 July 2007

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centres general manager, Mr Peter Brokenshire was recently presented with the Tourism Ministers Special Award at the Malaysia Tourism Awards 2005/2006. Mr Brokenshire received his award from the Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

The Tourism Ministers Special Award recognises individuals and organisations who have contributed significantly to Malaysias tourism industry.

Congratulating Mr Brokenshire, Datuk Ishak Imam Abas, Chairman of Convex Malaysia, said that under Mr Brokenshires leadership, the two-year-old Centre has grown to become the choice venue for organisers of numerous regional and international high profile events.

Mr Brokenshire has been responsible for managing and spearheading the operation of the Centre, a technologically-advanced and purpose-built facility and remains responsible for its overall management, Datuk Ishak Imam Abas said.

Joining the project in February 2003, Mr Brokenshire single handedly marketed the Centre until the team joined a year later. Successfully securing 169 events prior to the opening of the Centre in June 2005, the venue has grown from strength to strength.

Under his leadership, the Centre turned in an impressive performance with over 1.5 million people attending 430 events between January and December 2006, contributing RM 442.5 million to Malaysia in terms of economic impact.

In the international conventions arena, 17 of the 24 conventions held at the Centre last year were international events, representing 30 percent of the total number of meetings held in Kuala Lumpur. This in turn, contributed to Kuala Lumpurs global ranking leap in the International Conventions & Conference Associations (ICCA) statistical review of association meetings, which saw the capital moving up to 15th place compared with its 30th ranking the year before. This places Kuala Lumpur in fourth place in the Asia Pacific region after Singapore, Seoul and Beijing.

Mr Brokenshires career in hospitality spans more than 30 years in various positions within hotels, government bodies, catering companies and convention centres in South Africa, Australia and Malaysia. His professional affiliations include Fellow of the Catering Institute of Australia, a Maitre De Table De Restauranteur with the Confererie de la Chaine Des Rotisseurs. He is also a member of the Institute of Directors, Australia and South Africa.
