Scandinavian Design Hotels and WORLDHOTELS launch Special Promotions

Travel News Asia Monday, 2 July 2007

A number of contemporary design hotels from Sweden, Norway and Denmark within WORLDHOTELS’ 500-strong global collection have recently launched newly designed rooms to showcase the interior design flair and skills which are synonymous with the Scandinavian region.

The Hotel Riverton, Gothenburg, Sweden a member of the WORLDHOTELS First Class Collection, is a family run city centre hotel overlooking the river with shopping streets just five minutes stroll away, which has just opened the doors to 36 newly renovated rooms. The style is Scandinavian contemporary with other European influences, such as the luxurious bathrooms featuring Italian glass washbasins. There are further plans afoot for a total makeover of the Riverton during the coming years. Four new floors will be added on top of the building, which will add an extra 40 new rooms (the Riverton currently has 189 rooms). The top floor will house a new restaurant and a 600m² wellness and spa area.

The Riverton is currently offering guests the chance to be James Bond for a night with the “Casino-package” which includes free entry to the nearby Casino Cosmopol, plus a handful of chips to get you started. The weekend-package, also includes one complimentary drink at the bar, access to the relaxation lounge and a breakfast buffet, and is priced at 645 SEK (c.US$90) per person per night in a superior room.

Yet another unique room has been inaugurated at the Hotel Birger Jarl, Stockholm, Sweden which also belongs to the WORLDHOTELS First Class Collection. The double room called “Chez Pascale”, which has been decorated entirely in white, was named after designer Pascale Cottard-Olsson. Pascale has carefully selected furniture and furnishing items by Swedish designers including Anna von Schewen, Monica Förster and Anna Lerinder. The Birger Jarl has also renovated 23 business rooms. Jordens Arkitekter has decorated the rooms with a colour palette inspired by the city of Stockholm.

The city centre 235-room designer hotel is currently offering a two-night weekend ‘Design Package’, priced from 2,800 SEK (c.US$400 approx) based on two people sharing in a designer room. Guests receive on arrival a bag filled with design items, plus fresh fruit and sparkling wine. The package includes buffet breakfast as well as a free dessert when ordering a main course at the hotel’s Birger Restaurant.

The Grand Hotel Rica, Oslo, Norway a WORLDHOTELS’ Deluxe Collection member, has been an institution in the Norwegian capital for over a century and has recently designed a whole floor exclusively with women in mind. The hotel’s “Ladies Floor” dedicates each room to a successful Norwegian woman. Room 580, for example, is the “Golf Room” inspired by Suzann Pettersen, the Norwegian golfer. Its décor features wicker, cream and sporty stripes.

Another, the “Arctic Room”, is ornamented with furs and reindeer antlers in honour of Mari Boine, a Sami (Laplander) musician. The room inspired by Åsne Seierstad, the journalist and bestselling author of The Bookseller of Kabul, glimmers with eastern touches.

Room features include luxurious bathroom amenities by L'Occitane, a yoga mat, flowers, selected fruits, magazines and books, and a special Ladies Floor room-service menu, as well as free wireless high-speed internet access, flat-screen cable TV, and an entertainment centre. The Grand Hotel first opened its doors in 1874. The Louis XVI revival style building has 290 rooms, including 52 suites, and is situated right on Karl Johans gate, Oslo's main street. Rooms on the Ladies Floor are priced from 1,880 NOK (c.US$310) per night, including all taxes and buffet breakfast in the Grand Cafe.
