Virgin Atlantic
has launched its first flights to and from Scotland. The Glasgow to Orlando service
took to the skies on Saturday, 23 June 2007.
The flight, which has been launched jointly with Virgin Holidays, is one of
four consecutive Saturday flights that will be operated from Glasgow throughout the Scottish schools’ summer holidays. Flights will resume again
on a weekly schedule from the 6 October 2007 in time for the Scottish schools’ half term break. The last departure to Orlando will be 13 October
2007. More flights will operate on selected days in April, June, July and
October 2008.
The flights will be operated by a 747-400 aircraft with
Virgin's Upper Class suite, that features reclining leather seats for take off, a place
to sit and eat a meal opposite a partner, one of the longest fully flat beds in the
world with a proper mattress and duvet, a private onboard bar to drink at and four limousines per return trip.
Gordon Dewar, Managing Director of Glasgow International Airport
said, “We are delighted to welcome Virgin Atlantic, and its partner Virgin
Holidays, to Glasgow Airport. Virgin Atlantic are one of the biggest
names in the airline industry, and one of the world’s fastest growing airlines, with a rapidly expanding international route network that
now includes Scotland, for the first time ever. The new service has already
proved a phenomenal success, and next year’s expanded programme is already selling well, proving that Scotland is well
capable of sustaining world class airlines such as Virgin Atlantic.”
