While resounding cheers could be heard as Lim's Prestige galloped to take the top spot at the 12th
Emirates Singapore Derby, the event's title sponsor, Emirates, had an even better reason to
celebrate - it had successfully set a new Sin$161,100 fundraising record for charity.
In line with its theme for this year, Emirates Singapore Derby: 12 Years On! - Celebrating the Art of
Racing, the Dubai-based airline had earlier pledged to raise at least
Sin$120,000 for 12 charities under
the Community Chest of Singapore.
Close to 550 guests at the 12th Emirates Singapore Derby were encouraged to play their part for charity by purchasing "Pick and Win"
contest coupons, where each coupon entitled guests to predict the winning horse in each of the races. In addition, Emirates had earlier sold
donation tables in the hospitality rooms to corporate and private sponsors, and also received outright donations from corporations and
individuals.
Stephen Chu, Emirates' Area Manager for Singapore and Brunei, said, "We are most delighted with the outcome of our fundraising efforts.
This was our most ambitious fundraising drive in the history of the Emirates Singapore Derby and I want to convey my heartfelt thanks to our
guests and donors, who have so generously supported this initiative year after year. I would also like to thank Mr Francis Kwok, who for the
fourth year running, has created and donated such a beautiful work of art for auction at the Derby."
